Living Elf

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 10, 2007, 11:37 AM
Well the 100 Picture Challenge lost my enthusiasm. I finished 19 of 100 pieces. Part of the problem is in order to convey so many of the topics, they require a scene, at least in my imagination, to convey the topic...and conveying scenes is not something I enjoy. My husband really enjoys it, creating a scene in a character's life and showing a glimpse into that character doing something be it reflection or caught in the middle of a ritual. Me, I'm not a scene person, I'm a portrait person.

Even as a child, Virginia had great museums and I got to travel to many of them with school. Regardless of oil paintings or sculptures, I could stare at the faces forever. I didn't care for the scenes, the windowed pictures into people's lives. What struck me was the spirit of the person within a portrait, within the sculpture of their facial expression.

So that is my new thing, what I will be doing, and it's something I WANT to do. A lot of the art projects I've done in this last year of jumping into the unknown waters of art have given me the acid reflex of dread, of angst of whether I could pull off a scene or a project that was acceptable quality. The only projects I've really enjoyed were my portraits...so if art, for me, is about enjoying what I'm doing creatively, than portraits it is.

I am going to create a series of Living Elves, where I take photo's of real life models and turn them into elves, trying to capture their essences in those elven portrait pieces.

Below is a link to an example of this, the model's photo, and my attempt to capture her glow and her smile.

Thanks for the :+devwatch:!

Wonderful portraits! I guess I'm more of a "scenes" person myself, but I think the goal is the same - to show people and not just "figures".

Anyone else want to join me in sending flying monkeys at J.K. Rowling? She's killed off three characters in half her series and promises to kill off two more. I can't allow myself to love her characters anymore because I can't trust her to not kill them, and frankly, it's getting demoralizing. By the end of the seventh book, her serial killing of major characters is going to get redundant. Great world, that world of Harry Potter she created, but the deaths are now starting to get tedious.

The mass populace is foolish, idiotic and uncaring. It is in the individual that you may find wisdom, intelligence and compassion.

Gawd I hate allergy sinus-headaches. I just know the cotton-wood puff balls are about to drop off their trees somewhere and start blowing over into my yard. These pounding sinuses never lie.

I've decided I really, really like watercolor. I love sketching but I crave color. I've seen a lot of people adding color to their drawings via programs like photoshop. I've heard them discuss the differences between brushes and the like. I have a hard time with using digital media. Maybe I'd have more control with a pad instead of using just the mouse/trac-ball. Not sure I want to bother trying to master that when I already have more control with watercolor.

I get a lot of control with the watercolors, and just enough random with the way I can bleed the colors into each other. Besides, I'm not just a traditionalist capricorn, I'm an old traditionalist capricorn and I just really enjoy traditional art form. The only thing I miss living where I am now is the lack of a really good art museum nearby. When I lived in Virginia those two years and they took us to an art museum in school...that was the best field trip I ever went on in school. It even beat the field trip from the LA school down to SeaWorld.

Yup, skecthing and watercolors are the media for me. Watercolor ftw!
